France's Shocking 20th Century Slave Trade

Island of the Lost Children-France:1,600 children were transported from the island of Reunion to France in the 1960s and were forced to work as slaves.

Children from Reunion were transported to rural France during the 1960s and forced to work as slave labourers by the French government.

Jean-Pierre Gosse was detained as a virtual slave on a French farm. He shows his young daughter around the fields where he once worked. "Daddy used to sleep under straw to keep warm. And daddy used to share the dog's food," he tells her. He was just one of 1,600 children transported from the island of Reunion to work in France. The children were promised an education and frequent holidays home but these benefits never materialised. Instead they were forced to work unpaid for up to 20 hours a day. Other children were stolen from their parents and given to French families. Now the lost children of Reunion are fighting for compensation. As Gosse explains: "I want the state to officially admit that they deliberately deported people to make slaves of them."

France faces up to scandal of Réunion's stolen children
Hundreds of children were taken from island territory in official scheme to boost French rural population in 1960s and 70s

Jean-Jacques Martial was six years old when he arrived at Orly airport in Paris one November morning wearing flip-flops and shorts. He had been removed from his grandmother's care in the French island territory of Réunion as part of an official scheme to help boost the falling population in the rural heart of the mother country. He had only one idea in his head: "I was going to cultivate myself and I would denounce what had happened to me," he said.

You might not think so but to some it is a tasty snack that is high in protein at least as Sara Firth reports that is how inmates in the UK started to think about the humble cockroach crawling in their prison cell.
